Artwork of the Day – March 29th

This acrylic painting is a rework of something I created about 4 years ago. I just felt it needed more.

It is on a 12 x 12 inch gallery wrapped canvas and the color is on all sides.

Portable Art Mediums – Product Review

I travel quite a bit and with the restrictions being imposed at airports have had some of my supplies taken away from me.  Sketching on location is a fun activity and I like to make notes beside my sketches in my book about the place I’m at, the mood it invoked and other intricacies that are often not relayed in a photo.  My pastels are great for travel but there are times when I’m concerned about the mess they can make in my suitcase despite them being well wrapped etc.  One time while teaching at a Dick Blick store my entire pastel travel box got knocked off the table and for years there was a lovely medley of colour all over the carpet!

For quick trips or when traveling via plane I have enjoyed taking my coloured pencils and sketchbook along.  They are a dry medium and are relatively lightweight and easy to pack.  This video gives some good information on the Prismacolor range of pencils and art sticks.  I love Prismacolor and have used them for many years.  Don’t think of artist grade coloured pencils like the one’s we all used in school.  Professional grade pencils are rich in pigment and undergo rigorous testing for lightfastness and other properties.

The Arts connect us all – anywhere, anytime

The Global IWD Women’s Arts Initiative celebrates the collective creative ability of women. 2011 sees 100 years since the first International Women’s Day was held so to mark this special Centenary the ‘100 Women, 100 Artworks‘ and ‘100 Women, 100 Stories‘ initiative was launched.

All the artworks (paintings, sculptures, installations, photographs, drawings, sketches, collages …) and stories have been created by diverse women from around the world to inspire, challenge, entertain and provoke thought from a gender angle. The impressive artworks celebrate the artistic grace of women. The stories are of celebration, hurt, triumph, shock, humour, anger, remembrance and question. Enjoy !

Technical Issues…

Oh this is too funny… I just fought with the upgrade of my blog from WordPress 3.0.4 to  WordPress 3.0.5 as none of the themes seem to be working. I have just spent almost two entire work days getting it all straightened out.

I just looked at the top of the admin panel and it says “WordPress 3.1 is available! Please update now” aaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh….  are they crazy!  LOL

Thanks for dropping by even if it isn’t pretty when you get here!

Cheers for now,

Colleen

Easel Update

Today I have darkened the background, given both the cherries and bowl more form and added to the butterfly.

Orignal oil painting by Colleen Brown. Butterfly on Cherries 7 x 5.

Butterfly on Cherries in progress

To increase my artwork production I intend to begin working on more than one painting at a time.  I have always worked one primarily and waited until that is finished before beginning another.  Times are changing and I am adopting some new ideas for my studio.

On the Easel

This is a butterfly native to Oklahoma where I currently live.  Looks like he is trying to find just the right cherry.

This progress photo shows the first blocking in stage.  This is oil on panel and measures 7 x 5 inches.

Balanced Composition in Painting

After discussion with a mentor friend of mine he suggested that I add an element to the lower right hand corner which in essence will provide a more balanced composition.  Often I like the look of the unbalanced as it can provide tension in the painting, but this time I actually prefer this painting with the addition over the original posted below.  Let me know your thoughts on compositional balance.

Early Morning Light - Original oil painting by Colleen Brown, Still life, fruit, balance, composition

Early Morning Light - Revised 8 x 8 inches

I am still having some difficulty taking good photographs of my oil paintings due to the glare and shine.  Anyone with any suggestions please email me, I would sincerely appreciate it!
